[edit] What to pay attention to? Price/quality of Teak
As with all furniture and teakwood, there is always a difference in material and construction details of furniture and the teak. Often this can be seen in the price, which doesn't always imply that more expensive is better.
What is a good price/quality ratio? If you don't know anything about furniture or teak wood this can be hard at times. Choose cheap and take a risk it will be a cat in a bag? Or spend a little more and go for quality?
[edit] What to pay attention to? How to recognize bad quality teakwood and teak furniture?
- Sapwood, no heartwood. The disadvantage of sapwood is that it's softer and not as durable, especially with teak garden furniture. This can be easily recognized by larger surfaces of lighter, almost white wood. With teak tables it almost seems as if there are flames inside the top of the table. There are several gradations in teak. A-, B- and C-quality teak wood. Sapwood is C-quality.</br>
- Undried teakwood or teak with a high degree of moist. The big problem is that wood can rip. The wood is moist and a little bit swollen. Once placed in an insolated and heated house the moist will come uit and rips will appear. How to recognize this? It's hard to spot with the naked eye or to feel. There are some machines to measure the degree of moisture. Call an expert when in doubt.
- Bad furniture construction. A bad construction depends on the type of furniture. A table surface should never be glued to the lower part! All wood works and in case the surface is glued it will rip and the legs will not be straight anymore.
